Sharing Sweaters

My daughter’s sweater has to be hung to dry. The fiber content has some odd blend, one of them being 15% wool. I like the sweater because it reminds me of one I had when I was about 14, or just about Paige’s age. My navy and kelly green sweater was 100% wool and I had to hand wash it and then lay it out on a dry towel on the living room floor and actually pin it down so it wouldn’t shrink. Maybe that’s why Paige’s preppy sweater is only 15% wool.

When Paige was born, grunge was in style. I was horrified when babysitters showed up with ragged jeans and unwashed hair. That grunge singer who killed himself, Kurt Cobain, scared the heck out of me. I remember praying, “Dear God, please let preppy come back by the time Paige is a teen.”

Paige has made good style choices. Good meaning preppy and navel covering. When I was growing up there really weren’t other choices. I mean I got really racy one night when I was 19 and wore a sweater vest without a polo shirt underneath. My mom said it looked ‘trashy’. Ahh, the good old days of trashy sweater vests.

Now that Paige and I wear the same size we both scrutinize each other’s purchases. When I returned home with a really cool sweater a couple weeks ago Paige admitted that she had gone into my room to try it on. I was a little irked, but didn’t tell her. I haven’t tried on her sweater yet, but this clothes-sharing concept could be kind of cool. With Christmas approaching I have the capacity to not only buy Paige some nice things, but also pad my wardrobe. Umm, that sounds like I may need to brush up on the true meaning of Christmas! But woman are funny creatures about our clothes. We’re never quite satisfied with what’s in our own closet.

Paige will only be home for another four years. Our time to share clothes is brief and will fly by as fast as the “50% off all sweaters” sale at American Eagle. So as trivial as it may be, I’m going to embrace our same-sizeness and open my closet to her. Thank goodness I long ago threw out those horrid trashy sweater vests.

I think it would disgust my teenage daughter to wear anything I own, just because it’s mine. I should have made sure to wear all that stuff that is trendy now (the butt-crack-showing pants, the too-tight shirts, the plunge necklines) so that she would refuse to put them on.

Did I used to wear baggy clothes and have unwashed hair? I don’t remember those days!

Same size as your daughter! That’s a real accomplishment and worthy of some clothes sharing.

I think it’s great you two can wear the same clothes, and I love your attitude to enjoy and embrace it!
And yes styles are funny. I cringe at the things I once wore……..but I secretly smile to myself knowing that todays teenagers will someday cringe at the styles they are now wearing!! He He

Enjoy this season of life with your daughter!
Got to love a girl who wears her mom’s clothes and leaves comments on her blog!! :) You go Paige!

I *heart* preppy teenage girls too! I was scared to death I was gonna see the thong up over the low cut jeans. I pass out just thinking of it!

Having no daughters with whom to share…I do have several suitcases full of “vintage” stuff I shall bring out for the granddaughters one of these days…will be enlightening to see what (if anything) interests them!
